Summer in Chowan County

Summer is in the air. You can smell it.

Boats fill the water, kids play at the parks, and families look forward to summer vacations.

Here in Chowan County, summer is a season that brings our community together to celebrate the heritage and lifestyle we enjoy here on the Albemarle Sound.

If you’re curious about life in Chowan County or even looking to visit this summer, here are some events and activities that will give you a taste of what it’s like to live here.

In Chowan County, summer is baseball season. On the heels of two back-to-back championship wins, the Edenton Steamers kick-off their 2024 season on May 31st with a home game at Historic Hicks Field.

Edenton has been hosting the Steamers faithfully for years because this team and league represent the best of what baseball means.

College players from around the country will be living in Edenton this summer, playing the game they love, improving their skills, and honing their craft.

And our community loves to come out to cheer on our players, enjoy the camaraderie of friends and neighbors, and even take in a fireworks show!

If you love fishing, there is no better place to live on the east coast. Every fisherman around here has some secret spot tucked away in a cove of some tributary hidden off the Albemarle Sound.

Because Edenton is a waterfront community, there are seemingly endless spots to fish from the parks, marinas, and open spaces all along the water.

Every summer weekend, hundreds of trucks with empty boat trailers are sitting parked at Chowan County marinas while their owners are out on the water competing in another fishing tournament.

And this summer, we are very excited to be hosting Stage Five of Major League Fishing’s Bass Pro Tour! Professional anglers will be flooding the Chowan River to compete in this exciting and prestigious event right here in Chowan County.

If ocean fishing is your thing, the Sound opens up to the Atlantic Ocean and all the deep-sea sportfishing you could dream about.

Chowan County’s location on the Inner Banks makes it a convenient stop on the way to the Outer Banks. On many weekends, Chowan County empties of locals as residents flock to the beach for a day trip or a long weekend.

The Outer Banks is world-famous for beautiful beaches, and because we live just about 90 minutes from most of the best ones, we get to enjoy them pretty much whenever we want.

We can stick our toes in the sand, unplug a bit, and fall asleep to the sound of the waves crashing on the seashore.

But the Outer Banks offer much more than beaches. You can spend an afternoon at Jockey’s Ridge State Park flying kites, climbing sand dunes, or visiting the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kitty Hawk.

You can visit the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island, and of course, enjoy some of the best seafood restaurants – all within a close drive from Chowan County!

The summer is the best time to take advantage of the almost endless opportunities to have a good time.

During the summer months, downtown Edenton hosts our Summer Concert Series and Sunday Street Parties where locals and visitors can enjoy good food, drinks, music, and much more!

We also celebrate our agricultural heritage with events such as Heritage Farm Fest and our annual Chowan County Regional Fair.

Whether you love music, dancing, or fried things on a stick, there are parties, events, and special festivals lined up throughout the summer in Chowan County.

Summer is the perfect season to experience the welcoming community and fun celebrations that make Chowan County a wonderful place to work and live!
