ECU Health Chowan Hospital: A Local, Community Partner

In small towns all across America, local hospitals are vanishing, causing healthcare to become more concentrated into larger metro areas and leaving communities increasingly without access to good, local healthcare.

And it isn’t just hospitals.

In many of these more rural areas, doctors’ offices and specialty clinics are also closing in favor of more metropolitan areas. The range of care is diminishing too, with many hospitals jettisoning labor and capital intensive services like birthing centers.

But, ECU Health Chowan Hospital is reversing that trend.

Staying here. Offering local care.

It’s about more than profits. It’s about serving the community that has partnered with this hospital for 70+ years.

Through thick and thin, the hospital and community are so intertwined that sometimes it’s hard to tell things apart.

The hospital has been in Edenton for nearly 77 years and has been a fixture of the community for the entire time, serving at least four counties surrounding Chowan.

Originally, it was an independent community hospital, but in the 90’s, town and county leaders recognized that if they wanted to keep the hospital here and be able to offer residents local care, they needed to take action.

So, they hatched a plan and got this hospital connected to the Pitt County Memorial Hospital System.

From there, it grew into a regional location of Vidant, and today, it is a critical part of the ECU Health Hospital System.

Currently, ECU Health Chowan Hospital serves more than 100,000 people annually.

And that’s due to the efforts of ECU Health to partner with the local community leadership and residents to offer the best healthcare in the immediate area.

In times of crisis, like when Hurricane Isabel damaged the town in 2003, the hospital stayed open, with the help of town and county officials, local police, sheriffs and others, so that critical care could be offered in a timely manner.

When students are considering going into a healthcare occupation, the hospital and local doctors’ offices afford them the opportunity to explore what those careers are really like through internships and job shadowing.

In a cooperative partnership with ECU Health Chowan, local sports teams are able to work with professional trainers and have access to orthopedic and sports medicine specialists, giving athletes greater safety as they participate in sports.

On a daily basis, ECU Health Chowan offers residents specialized services such as emergency and trauma care, women’s services and a birthing center, radiology and surgery, and therapy and rehabilitation – all locally.

And with direct access to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, doctors are able to diagnose and treat a wide range of healthcare issues.

This comprehensive access to quality healthcare is a crucial determining factor in attracting businesses and retirees to Chowan County. People know that they will be able to have their healthcare needs met right here in the community.

Additionally, ECU Health is an economic driver in the community, actively recruiting the best doctors, nurses, and specialists to work in the hospital and healthcare offices in Edenton and also investing in the community through community grant programs, community health initiatives, and pop-up community health events.

With more than 500 employees working locally in Chowan County, ECU Health is one of the largest employers in the area.

And, they are continually recruiting both locally and nationally to find the best providers.
