Chowan County Now Boasts a Gigabit City!

In today’s digital age, having access to reliable broadband internet is crucial for businesses to stay competitive and thrive. One of the main reasons why broadband access is so important for companies in rural areas is that it allows them to connect with customers, suppliers, and partners all over the world.

By partnering with businesses, local and state government, and community organizations, the Edenton Chowan Partnership is focused on improving the quality of life in Chowan County in order to foster economic development, support businesses, and promote endeavors that will benefit the entire community.

One beneficial endeavor is improved and expanded digital connectivity for businesses and residents, which is why the Partnership is excited about the recent designation of Edenton as the first Gigabit City of its size in northeastern North Carolina!

So, what exactly is a Gigabit City?

A “Gigabit City” refers to a community that has access to high-speed internet connections capable of reaching speeds of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) or higher.

Gigabit Cities are on the cutting edge of technology and are leading the way in providing high-speed internet access to their residents. These cities are investing in fiber optic infrastructure to ensure that their residents have the connectivity they need to thrive in the digital age.

Working in partnership with Fybe, a broadband service provider with Roanoke Cooperative, the Town of Edenton is now a community where 100% of its residents and businesses have access to broadband internet at gigabit speeds.

In addition, the Town of Edenton has been able to launch SmartTown, offering free community wifi access within its historic district, and SmartBiz, offering internet connectivity to local businesses.

Some Chowan County residents outside of Edenton’s downtown also benefit from this partnership with Fybe.

Up until recently some homes and businesses in more rural parts of Chowan County only had satellite-based internet options, dial-up, or no internet coverage.

Fybe worked with the town’s utility and electrical departments to bring Fiber to the Home (FTTH) technology by following Edenton’s electrical utility coverage.

This provided broadband internet options for 4,300 homes and businesses, offering a more secure internet connection that is less susceptible to weather-related incidents or other service disruptions.

What does this mean for businesses and residents in Edenton and Chowan County?

First, Edentonians benefit from a fast and reliable internet connection, which means businesses can easily communicate with clients, collaborate with colleagues, and conduct sales and marketing activities online. This not only expands their reach but also opens up new opportunities for growth and expansion.

Furthermore, broadband access enables businesses in rural areas to take advantage of the latest digital tools and technologies that can help them streamline their operations, improve efficiency, and boost productivity.

In addition, broadband access can also help rural businesses attract and retain top tech-savvy talent. With the ability to work remotely and access online training and development programs, employees are no longer limited by their geographic location.

This can be a game-changer for companies, as they can tap into a larger pool of skilled workers and create a more diverse and dynamic workforce that benefits the entire community by boosting the local economy and creating a hub for innovation and collaboration.

As Edenton’s Mayor Hackney High reiterated, “We are grateful and thrilled that this service now exists for our residents and businesses…it keeps our community moving forward with rapidly changing times.”

Overall, broadband access is essential for companies in rural areas to stay competitive in today’s global economy, and businesses looking to relocate to Edenton and Chowan County will now find the digital infrastructure they need to thrive!

By investing in reliable internet infrastructure and leveraging the latest digital tools and technologies, local businesses can overcome the challenges of distance and isolation and thrive in a digital world.

As more and more cities around the world invest in high-speed internet infrastructure, the concept of Gigabit Cities is likely to become more commonplace, and the Edenton Chowan Partnership is proud to be a partner in a Gigabit City.
