Celebrating Community at the Ballfield

One of the things that attracts so many people to Chowan County, North Carolina, is the close-knit sense of community that draws people together and characterizes our way of life.

During the summer, there’s no better way to experience this close-knit community and way of life in Chowan County than by attending an Edenton Steamers baseball game at Historic Hicks Field!

In Edenton, baseball is more than just a sport. It’s friends and neighbors gathering together to cheer on their favorite hometown team. It’s both young and old bonding over juicy hot dogs, roasted peanuts, and cold drinks while watching their favorite players.

And it’s not just the games that bring the community together. The local league also hosts events throughout the season, from fundraising dinners to community service projects. Baseball is a powerful force for good in Edenton, bringing people together and strengthening the bonds of community.

Coming off of back-to-back championship wins, the hype and anticipation of this season is bigger than ever!

The community is thrilled to see many returning championship players and a head coach who will undoubtedly lead the team to their third championship win.

But there are also some new exciting developments for the Edenton Steamers this season.

The Steamers have a new general manager, a new assistant general manager, new merchandise, and new promotional nights for fans. They are also part of a new league. It’s a lot to get excited about!

Jared Taylor, the new GM, is “excited about joining a new league which will bring new competition and a fun slate for fans to enjoy.” This new league, The Old North State League, comprises up to 20 teams, and Jared believes that “every game will be a new experience” for fans.

Fans are pumped anticipating new rivalries and a season full of new possibilities.

In addition to these changes, the Edenton Steamers homefield is anticipating some exciting improvements, such as a new camera system that will enable live streaming of home games.

Historic Hicks Field was built in 1939 as a WPA project and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

Today, it is the oldest remaining wooden grandstand of its type in North Carolina and has been rated the #2 summer collegiate venue in the country by Baseball America.

Historic Hicks Field is full of tradition and history as multi-generational families have enjoyed gathering for summer games here and cheering on their favorite players.

Former Edenton Steamers players have made it to the Big Leagues including David Bednar, pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Joey Wendell, infielder for the New York Mets, and Chris Bassitt, pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Steamers season kicks off with a home game on May 31st at 7:00 p.m., and we invite you to join our community and experience the excitement and camaraderie of baseball in Chowan County!

It’s just one example of why so many people have visited Edenton, experienced Edenton, and decided to make Chowan County their new home.

So whether you’re a die-hard fan or just looking for a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon, baseball in Edenton has something for everyone. Come out to the ballpark, grab a seat in the stands, and join in the camaraderie and excitement that baseball brings to this charming town.
