Albemarle Boats: A Reputation for Dedication and Versatility

Albemarle Boats

With their dedication to quality craftsmanship and their commitment to providing a versatile and reliable boat, Albemarle Boats has been a leader in the industry for over four decades and has become a trusted name worldwide.

If you’re a fan of boating and fishing, then you’ve probably heard of Albemarle Boats, manufactured here in Edenton, North Carolina, in Chowan County.

One of the things that sets Albemarle Boats apart from its competitors is their deep-rooted heritage.

The company was founded in 1978 by a group of boating enthusiasts who had a vision of creating a boat that could withstand the harsh conditions of the Atlantic Ocean.

The company’s location in Edenton, situated on the often choppy waters of the Albemarle Sound, was an ideal spot for testing and perfecting their boats.

Since 1978, Albemarle Boats has been shipping boats known for their exceptional performance and durability across the world.

You can tell an Albemarle Boat by its distinctive hull shape, a large sweeping Carolina flare that cuts through rough waters that would force other boats off the water.

The construction process involves using top-of-the-line materials, such as fiberglass and composite core, to ensure that each boat can handle rough waters and tough weather conditions.

This attention to detail and quality ensures that Albemarle Boats can handle any adventure you throw at them, whether it’s a day of offshore fishing or a leisurely cruise along the coast.

Another remarkable aspect of Albemarle Boats is their versatility as a company.

Over the years, as their product line expanded and their footprint grew, their customer base grew, with dealers in North America, Central and South America, Asia, Australia, and Europe.

Albemarle Boats and their sister company, Carolina Classic, were successful brands with several thousand boats in the water.

When 2008 brought the economy crashing down, many boat manufacturers had to shut down or lay off many employees.

In those days, people weren’t buying boats, and the company faced a crucial and difficult decision. How could they keep their employees and run a successful business?

In response, this boat-builder of 30 years pivoted to become a refurbisher and repairer.

By this time, there were already thousands of boats all over the world, many that had been on the water for a decade or more.

So, the company began contacting their longtime customers and offering to refresh, repair, and renew their boats. After all, who better to bring a boat back to like-new condition than the company that built it and knew everything about it?

And, it worked. For several years, they hummed along, and then Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast. Devastating ports, docks, and repair facilities, Sandy wrecked lives from New Jersey to New England and beyond.

Boats in drydock for the winter were picked up by the waves of superstorm Sandy and tossed into neighborhoods, onto streets, into backyards, and even back out to sea.

And, because of the devastation, there was no one to fix them.

So, this company, which had spent years perfecting the repair process, took in more than a dozen of their boats, fixing them, restoring them, and repairing them.

Again, Albemarle Boats was able to pivot and keep their business thriving.

When March 2020 hit, and COVID began forcing talk of shutdowns and social distancing, again, no one knew what was going to happen.

But Albemarle Boats had already weathered the economic crash of 2008 and the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

As a manufacturer, they never closed, and eventually, as people flocked to the water, something extraordinary happened.

Instead of slowing down, the demand for reliable, quality boats skyrocketed, and they couldn’t make their boats fast enough. Existing Albemarle Boat owners were selling their old boats and then purchasing new ones as fast as they could get their hands on them.

Instead of having to weather another storm, the company was pushing boats out as fast as they could manufacture them!

This was, in many ways, the payoff for the lessons they learned in the lean years after 2008 and a testament to how their versatility and ingenuity kept them afloat.

Through good years and bad years, Albemarle Boats has persevered with grit, determination, and sheer commitment. The company has manufactured over 3,600 boats and offered a range of models, each designed for specific boating needs.

But, this success story isn’t a solo job.

As one of Chowan County’s longtime successful employers, there’s a symbiotic relationship between the county and local business that makes everyone successful.

The Town of Edenton is invested in Albemarle Boats.

The Edenton-Chowan Partnership assists in helping them get grants and funding to expand operations, employ more people, create more jobs, and grow their business.

They also help look for skilled workers. Trim carpenters, mechanical engineers, and people with DC electrical experience are all in high demand at Albemarle Boats.

It’s a win-win situation to work for such a reputable company that takes care of its employees and to live in Chowan County on the Albemarle Sound.

Beyond their exceptional boats, Edenton, NC, offers a fantastic boating and fishing community.
