4 Great Weekends to Visit Chowan County in 2024

Cupola House

Are you trying to find the right location to open a new business or move an existing company? Perhaps you are considering employment with one of our local businesses or industries? Or, maybe you are seeking the perfect retirement location?

Chowan County is a great place to consider for relocation or your next business venture!

But we understand that before you make such a big decision, you need to check out the area, so we’ve compiled a list of four great weekends to visit Chowan County in 2024. These four weekends will give you a sense of what our community is like and what we have to offer.

And we’ve spread these weekends throughout the year so you can get a sense of what it’s like to experience Chowan County during the spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Each weekend encompasses a Friday through Sunday, with most scheduled events happening on Friday and Saturday. We’ve added bonus activities and recommendations for Sunday so that you can get a fuller experience of what it’s like living in Edenton and Chowan County.

Weekend #1: Spring is in Bloom!  April 26 – 28

Springtime in Chowan County is absolutely beautiful with warmer weather starting in early March and wonderful days of sunshine.

Farmers are tending to their fields as green shoots begin to peek their heads out of the rich soil, and beautiful gardens bloom in vibrant colors.

Come visit us during April 26th through April 28th to experience this beautiful time of year as we host our Easels in the Garden Tour in downtown Edenton.

This two-day affair offers an exceptional pairing of special gardens with talented plein-air artists, each creating unique works of art in beautiful outdoor settings. The Cupola House showcases Colonial Revival Gardens with a variety of heirloom plants, and the newly opened Hayes Farm Garden will be included on the tour for the first time.

On Saturday night, you can mingle with the locals and join in the festivities of Boogie on Broad where the community gathers for a fun night of live music, good food, and street dancing!

On Sunday, relax on a Trolley Tour of Edenton’s historic district where you’ll learn about our 300 years of history, making stops at important historical sites and catching glimpses of more beautiful gardens as you pass by restored Victorian mansions and Colonial dwellings.

Plan to call the Penelope Barker House Welcome Center in advance to reserve your spot on this very popular Trolley Tour, or visit the Penelope Barker House to pick up a brochure and map of our historic Museum Trail to take a walking tour at your own pace through some of Edenton’s iconic streets.

Weekend #2: A Major League Summer Competition!  June 8 – 10

We are very excited to host stage five of Major League Fishing’s 2024 Bass Pro Tour in June. The world’s top professional bass anglers will spend six days on the Chowan River competing for millions of dollars in this world-renowned, prestigious event.

Come visit Chowan County during this exciting competition to see why our location on the Albemarle Sound is perfect for enjoying the outdoors, especially on the water.

During most of the year, our residents enjoy boating, fishing, kayaking, water skiing, swimming, and more. You can rent kayaks at our waterfront Colonial Park, fish from the pier, or take a tour of our 1886 Roanoke River Lighthouse while you’re in town for the weekend.

And, while you’re enjoying the summer fun, why not take a Sunday afternoon boat ride with Captain Mark on the Liber-Tea? You’ll be entertained with a waterfront tour of Edenton, learn more about Edenton’s maritime history, and catch one of our gorgeous sunsets on the water!

And to cap off a sports-filled weekend, take in an Edenton Steamers Game on Sunday evening at historic Hicks Field.

Better yet, plan to book a weekly rental or a room at one of our gracious B&Bs for the week if you’d like to be a part of all of the tournament excitement which starts on June 4th.

Accommodations will book up quickly, so act now to reserve your summer home-away-from-home in Edenton!

Weekend #3: Our 250th Anniversary Celebration!  October 25 – 27

This year is very special because it is the 250th Anniversary of the Edenton Tea Party, and we have celebrations planned all throughout the year. However, the culmination of events will take place during this weekend in October.

Leading up to this momentous weekend, the Edenton Historical Commission will be offering special, once-a-month Tea Party Trolley Tours featuring signers of the Edenton Tea Party Resolves.

Each 45-minute tour will highlight costumed interpreters who will explain the significance of the Edenton Tea Party and the events leading up to this historic act by 51 women in Edenton. Additionally, each tour culminates with a tea party reception for all participants at one of the historic homes of a signer of the Edenton Tea Party Resolves.

So, if you’re visiting Chowan County any time during the year, be sure to check out the Tea Party Trolley Tours or other special events that are planned in celebration of the 250th Anniversary.

Then, join us in October for a special celebration on the exact date of the signing of the Edenton Tea Party Resolves. You’ll get to hear a memorable guest lecturer and attend an exclusive reception to commemorate this historic event.

Why not have a little fun while you’re in town by joining The Original Edenton Ghost Walk for a tour of the historic places and streets where the original 51 signers of the Edenton Tea Party Resolves lived and walked?

You might just catch a glimpse of one of our 51 heroic ladies, and you’ll learn a little about Edenton’s mysterious past.

Weekend #4: A Magical Christmas Candlelight Tour! December 13 – 15

By far our most popular and well-attended weekend every year is Edenton’s Christmas Candlelight Tour when visitors and residents are welcomed into festively decorated neighborhoods and historic homes.

This two-night holiday event features carolers, refreshments, horse-drawn carriage rides, and exclusive access to some of the most beautiful homes in downtown Edenton.

A different neighborhood in Edenton’s historic district is featured every year, so even if you’ve been on the tour in previous years, this year’s tour will be new and exciting!

Last year’s Christmas Candlelight Tour sold out, so don’t wait to reserve your tickets which will go on sale in July.

While you’re in town, get some holiday shopping done by visiting our bustling Broad Street where you’ll find a variety of shops with unique gifts for everyone on your list!

There are always plenty of activities to keep you busy in our friendly, welcoming community, so we hope you’ll visit and find out all that Edenton and Chowan County have to offer during one of these four special event weekends in 2024!
